Description

While AFFF-SFFF conversions have become more commonplace, other options such as flushing and component replacement have come to the market. Long term viability of SFFF systems has also become a question. This presentation examines several foam system conversions in the past few years, and will review case studies of water- and chemical-based system cleaning, conversions gone wrong, and PFAS rebound in converted systems. The presentation will also examine whether prepriming of fluorine-free foam systems is viable and its effects on both system maintenance and firefighting capabilities.

Upon completion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the four primary options available to convert an AFFF system to a SFFF system.
  • Explain the pros and cons of foam system flushing in lieu of piping replacement for PFAS contamination reduction.
  • Identify and describe why prepriming of SFFF systems does not have the same benefits as prepriming AFFF systems, and the detrimental impacts prepriming may have on system components.
