This seminar's content is derived from a research project conducted for the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation. The session will include an overview of the different types of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) currently in use. Common protection methods will be discussed, including sprinkler-based methods as well as non-sprinkler-based approaches. Issues with the current protection method will be identified, including difficulties involving fire service response to fires involving ASRS facilities. The potential need for changes in protection methods and strategies (including, but not limited to novel protection scheme and systems designed for suppression or final extinguishment) will be discussed.
Upon completion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Describe what ASRS systems are and identify the common types of ASRS systems.
- Explain the current requirements and standards for fire protection systems in ASRS facilities.
- Identify the limitations of current ASRS protection methods.
- Discuss proposed changes to NFPA 13.
