Retrofitting sprinkler systems in historic buildings presents unique challenges beyond which are typically encountered. Maintaining the historic fabric of the building can be paramount to all other features including sprinkler systems. In many historic buildings, the ability to achieve complete prescriptive code compliance can be impractical. Material selection, installation methods, and system longevity must be considered as part of the design and installation of sprinkler in historic properties. This presentation will address some of these unique challenges, provide recommendations for designers, engineers, and installers for solving these challenges. The presenters bring over 50 years combined experience working in historic buildings.
Upon completion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Discuss some of the unique challenges of working in historic buildings.
- Understand how to address scenarios where prescriptive code compliance is not feasible.
- Recognize why it is important to work collaboratively as part of a project team.
- Identify the importance of material selection, installation methods and system life.
