Description

The seminar will cover the overall objective of why and how we do sway bracing. It will explain the history of the ASCE 7 formula and how it is used to create Table 18.5.9.3 in the 2022 edition of NFPA 13. It will cover how to calculate lower seismic forces using the ASCE 7 formula and possibly reduce the number of sway braces required or possibly even eliminate the need to install them. A look into how the 2022 edition of ASCE 7 will change how NFPA determines the seismic coefficient in the future. This seminar will also introduce the new NFPA 200 standard.

Upon completion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:

  • Apply the ASCE 7 formula in Annex E of NFPA 13 to calculate lower seismic coefficients Cp than those shown in Table 18.5.9.3 of NFPA 13, 2022 edition.
  • Describe how to reduce or eliminate the number of sway braces required by calculating a lower seismic coefficient Cp value.
  • Describe the overall objective of sway bracing.
